babiators Archives – Little Big H

maximios / Recipes

I was searching the web looking for a pair of sun glasses for Little Big H and came across Babiators.com.  They have the coolest sunglasses for babies and young children.  I thought they wouldn’t stand a chance but they are flexible enough to withstand being bent out of shape and Little Big H seems to love wearing them.

They have 100% UVA and UVB protection from the suns harmful rays – a must for baby.  Register within 30 days from purchase and they come with a lost and found guarantee. If lost or broken, they’ll replace them!

Vegetables Archives – Little Big H

maximios / Recipes

This is my go to super easy lunch/dinner for Little Big H if I haven’t had time to prepare anything.  He loves it and its ready in 15 minutes. It’s best served cold, so make it ahead of time if you can.  If you don’t have a lots of fresh veggies on hand, it’s just as tasty with a stack of frozen peas and mint!

Fruit Archives – Little Big H

maximios / Recipes

Maybe not entirely toddler friendly but everyone deserves something sweet once in a while – right!  H is very much a savoury man but he is a fan of this cake. It is not overly sweet and the combination of cake and tart plums is heavenly.  I have made this cake a couple of times and H has made one almost entirely on his own.  He did most of the mixing and added the ingredients all in the wrong order, and it was still superb.  So get the kids involved with this one – you can’t go wrong…

If plums aren’t in season where you live, or you would prefer another fruit, try: apples, pears, cherries, peaches or even bananas

H and I went to the Northside Produce Market last weekend and bought these gorgeous fresh figs.  It was our first time there but we will definitely be going back.  We also bought a huge box of cherries, rhubarb, golden beets, zucchini flowers and H’s favourite, tomatoes…

February 2014 – Little Big H

maximios / Recipes

I couldn’t resist buying these super cute minikin pumpkins.  I have stuffed them with pearl barley and mixed veggies for a healthy alternative to a dish that is most often made with cream, cheese, ham, etc.

Slice into portions or scoop out the flesh and mash for your little one

Super light and crispy kale chips make a delicious snack.  Kale is one of the healthiest vegetables around, and is particularly high in vitamin K, A, and C

A delicious green smoothie that isn’t at all leafy tasting

June 2014 – Little Big H

maximios / Recipes

I don’t always have time to update the blog as much as I would like, but I do add to Instagram on a daily basis.  Follow us here to see what we are up to.  I post toddler meal ideas – breakfast, lunches, dinners, and snacks

A delicious compote that is great eaten by itself or we like it on our porridge of a morning

This is a very simple cake but it is truly delicious.  I’ve added some fresh rhubarb, one of my favourite ingredients –  It reminds me of my dad.  He used to grow it in the backyard and would always cook some for me when I went home.  We would have it with ice-cream or custard.  In this recipe it gives it a bit of a tang.

My little man has been off his food due to croup, so I made him a smoothie that I knew he would love.  Its packed full of goodness, but it still tastes great.  H loved it…

Puree Archives – Little Big H

Berry Coulis

Chicken with Apples and Thyme

Sole with Red Grapes and Fennel

I’m very excited to be sharing my very first guest post with you all, on a great blog called  Never the Same Spice Twice.  I have 3 new recipes suitable for baby 6 months plus.

Check it out here…

With consecutive 42 degree days in Melbourne this week, I was keen to beat the heat with this super easy chilled soup.  I wasn’t sure that Big H would go for the aniseed taste straight away but he did!

A refreshing puree of lychee, pineapple & apricot – perfect for a summer’s day

Now that Big H is 10 months old it won’t be long before he is eating dinner with Cam and I (no separate kids meals for us!).  So as often as I can I like to give Big H what we are having for dinner – only puréed.

It has been a challenge to avoid adding salt/sugar (and other ingredient that babies shouldn’t be having at this stage) and instead substituting with fruits and other ingredients to add sweetness or saltines.

My photography skills aren’t quite up to making pureed meat look appetising! I promise it tastes great

Summer Fruit Puree & Stone Fruit Puree with Cinnamon and Star Anise

I often make this dessert for Cam and I but with the addition of sugar syrup.  The sous vide cooks apricots amazingly well. They have a beautiful texture once cooked. You could also make this dish on the stove top if you don’t have a sous vide. The flavour will be the very similar but you will lose the velvety texture.  Little Big H loves the tartness of this dish but it if is too tart for your little one, try adding a banana or some cooked apple.

Moroccan Lamb Puff Pastry Triangles

Moroccan Lamb Puff Pastry Triangles – Little Big H

This recipe makes a large batch so you can freeze what’s left.  They defrost really well and are perfect for unexpected visitors or as a starter or light lunch.  The lamb filling has lots of spices along with mint and crumbly feta – really delicious.  I served it with a little golden kiwi fruit salsa (golden kiwi […]

This recipe is adapted from Movida restaurant in Melbourne and it is so good!  It would make an impressive side dish, light lunch, or even main course.  The rich flavours are balanced beautifully by the sharpness of the quince and although it does take a little time to prepare, I promise it will be worth… […]

Ribollita is a Tuscan soup made with lot of veggies, white beans and bread.  It is super easy to make and doesn’t take too long.  It is a great dish for the entire family.  Puree/mash for baby and leave it chunky for bigger kids and the family.   Ribollita – meaning reboiled, is a great… […]

Chocolate mousse is my current addiction…  and there will be none of that healthy avocado cocoa business here…  this is a traditional French chocolate mousse – dark chocolate, eggs, sugar, butter and vanilla. It’s velvety, thick and super rich but also somewhat light and fluffy! I could eat the entire bowl on my own! It’s easy to… […]

Green smoothies are to H what lollies are to a lot of kids – he absolutely loves them. Guaranteed if we walk past a juice bar, he will drag me kicking and screaming until he gets one – he loves to choose the ingredients and it has become his little treat after daycare a couple of times a… […]

kohlrabi Archives – Little Big H

I had never tried Kohlrabi before making this dish.  I spotted it at my local organic store and bought two.  A purple one and a green one.  I googled it when I got home and realised that it is very similar to cabbage.   I am a huge coleslaw fan so I thought I would… […]
